Tips From Oribe: Sexy Summer Waves

Need bombshell hair in a flash? Try these easy tips from Oribe, who's time-tested his skills for crafting just the right waves on-set, for the red carpet and at fashion week.

Tip #1: If you have wavy hair...
When Oribe styled Blake Lively for Vogue, he focused on moisture. "To get Blake's look, run Crème for Style through wet hair, and blow-dry or allow the hair to dry naturally," Oribe says. "If you go for a blowout, just be sure it's a quick one."

Tip #2: If your hair craves moisture...
Think Gisele, not Hollywood red-carpet, says Oribe: It's not about perfect ringlets. "Run Supershine through your hair, and allow it to air-dry," he explains. "Encourage the hair to clump together as it dries. You can add a spritz of Royal Blowout at the ends to increase separation."

Tip #3: If you need to fight frizz...
Summer humidity can turn sexy waves to fuzz, but Imperméable can save the day. Spray it through your locks after styling to prevent frizz. How To: Trendy Ponytail

Stylists love the look of hair wrapped around the elastic. To get this look, follow these directions:

Step 1: Pull hair back into a ponytail.
Step 2: Pull a pencil-thick piece of hair from the bottom of the pony.
Step 3: Wrap hair around elastic. Leave two inches to pull down through the elastic.
Step 4: Secure with a couple bobby pins.

How To: Fishtail Braid

Like all the best hairstyles, the fishtail braid (also known as the 'herringbone braid') is one that looks intricate and tricky to do, but with a bit of practice becomes nearly as easy to create as a regular three-strand braid. And like so many of today's popular styles, it actually looks better when it's slightly messed up rather than being perfectly neat and tidy - so no big deal if you happen to drop a strand here or there.

Steps:
1. Divide your detangled, second-day hair into two equal sections.

2. Hold the righthand section in your right hand. With your left hand, take a thin strand of hair from the outside of the lefthand section, cross it over, and add it to the inside of the righthand section.

3. Do the same thing on the other side: that is, hold the lefthand section in your left hand, use your right hand to take a thin strand of hair from the outside of the righthand section, cross it over, and add it to the inside of the lefthand section. You'll need to use gravity to your advantage as you keep changing hands, and if the strands keep slipping then your hair probably isn't 'dirty' enough (running some mousse or styling wax through your hair will fix this problem in a jiffy).

4. Repeat the process until you've reached the ends of your hair, tie the braid with a hair elastic, and voila—you're done!

If you want a single fishtail braid at the back, (as shown above), get a friend to do it for you.

One of the most effective ways to wear a fishtail braid is on the side, as an extra-special version of the classic side braid. It not only looks awesome but means that you can do it yourself in front of the mirror without needing to have anyone else there to help out. The looser you hold the strands, the 'fatter' your fishtail braid will be, giving a more relaxed finish to the overall look.

A fishtail braid can also be included as a single addition to loose hair.

Overcoming Tangled Hair...

Tangled hair is common across all hair types and is one of the biggest complaints I hear from clients with curly, fine, and long hair—not to mention mom's everywhere! Hair tangles can be frustrating, but have to be handled delicately to avoid damaging the delicate hair fibre, making it even more tangle-prone. A soft approach, and a little preventative care can make brushing a breeze.

1. Get hair trimmed regularly:   Snipping off dry split ends before they progress will keep hair in optimum shape. Even if you are trying to grow your hair long, regular trims will only take off a fraction of the growth, and will save you from having to trim off substantial damage down the road.  

2. Moisturize hair:   All moisture was not created equal! Some products feel moisturizing, but actually damage hair with repeated use. Shampoos, conditioners, and styling products should all contain healthy moisturizing oils that complement your hair's natural moisturizing properties. Hydrated hair is more pliable and resilient, and naturally withstands damage and frizz that can contribute to tangles.  

3. Brush before showering/washing:   When hair is wet it can stretch more, so brushing wet hair can actually cause additional stress to the hair shaft. Brush out your dry hair before you shower/wash. While washing, avoid swirling your hair in a circular motion as this can cause tangles. After your shower, spritz on a detangler to protect hair while you brush and style it. Using a wide tooth comb, work from the bottom of your hair to gently tease out any tangles. The best detanglers will not only get the tangles out, but also add moisture to prevent frizz and protect your hair from UV damage. 

4. Don't forget to style:   Like a good detangler, styling products can also help prevent tangles. As a final touch, add a shine-enhancing hair oil to your hair. Hair oils help prevent moisture loss and smooth the cuticle so that the hairs don't tangle. 

5. Extra measures:   For very long or tangle prone hair, put hair into a loose braid before bed or exposure to wind or exercise. If your hair tends to tangle overnight, sleep on a satin pillowcase.

How To: Boho Braids

Try Nicole Richie's delicate braids for a feminine, bohemian look!

Step 1: Blow-dry hair straight to make it easier to braid. Part hair in the center.

Step 2: Separate out a one-inch section on both sides of part — two inches back from the hairline. Take a two-inch piece above each ear, and clip out of the way. Pull the rest of hair into a low bun. Bobby-pin it against the nape of neck, and tuck in the ends.

Step 3: Braid each of the top sections down; pin the ends into your bun. Then braid the side sections over the top of your head. Pin the ends against your head, and smooth with pomade.

How To: Beachy Waves

It's almost summer, and sporting beach looks are near…

Below is a step-by-step guide to creating sexy beach waves at home.

You'll need:

-1" to 1 ¼" barrel curling iron

-A volumizing gel or spray—such as Volumista by Oribe

-A light hold hairpray—like Soft Lacquer, a heat activated setting spray by Oribe

Here's How:

1. Turn upside down and spray freshly washed (towel-dried) hair with volumizing spray.
2. If hair is naturally coarse or curly, work a straightening balm through hair. 
3. Brush hair (this works the product evenly through hair). Blowdry hair straight, starting at the roots to get extra volume. Hair must be completely dry for this look to work. Blow cold air at the roots to add volume (cold air locks in a style).
4. Separate hair into three sections, securing with a ponytail holder. (It's easier this way to curl your way through each section).
5. To curl hair, use a wide-barrel curling iron. Starting with one section, take a 1-inch portion of hair, spritz it with styling spray or hairspray. Wrap hair around the barrel of the curling iron. (Wrapping hair is different from the traditional curling method. You don't want to 'clip' hair into the barrel. Wrapping allows you to curl all the way to the root). When you're curling, make sure to leave ends loose to avoid a crimp mark.
6. Release the curl after about 5-10 seconds (hold longer if you want a tighter curl). You should have a corkscrew curl.
7. Alternate the direction of the curl as you work your way through each section. (It's all in the direction you wind hair around the barrel of the curling iron. Start by placing hair on top of the barrel and wrapping around, then switch by putting the barrel on top of the hair before winding it around). Alternating directions makes curls look more natural. Some curls can remain tight, some loose.
8. Remove nozzle from dryer and gently loosen waves with cool air. You can also separate curls with your fingers, just make sure not to brush them out. 
9. Set with hairspray. Just don't overdo it. You don't want new waves to feel "crunchy."
